Chapter Eighteen

The sun was rising over the rainforest, golden light creeping across the emerald canopy. Beneath it a silent war unfurled, a battle between the treetops that had been ongoing for the last thousand years and showed signs of stretching on into the next millennium too. Theirs was a war that was without mercy, every tree jostling for position so that it could drink in the precious rays of the sun. It was kill or be killed and whilst the war of the trees was less dramatic than some of the other wars that plagued Acamida it was no less important. The rainforest was a guiding star for the health of the world and the constant struggle for dominance made it strong. Vast reserves of mana flowed through its roots, spreading to every part of Acamida and providing the vital energies that the planet needed to survive. Upon its waves of magic rode fragments of divinity, sparks of godliness waiting to latch into a growing life and bestow it a soul.

Not that any of this mattered to the people currently living in one of the few holes in the canopy. The people of the tower were largely ignorant of the strife that surrounded them, focused as they were on their battle for survival. Right now, that struggle was distinctly lesser than it had been, the recent additions to their population making things easier. The handful of Golden warriors that had accompanied Mariska had spent most of the morning helping out the hunting parties and whilst they silently begrudged having to work with organics none of them was willing to refuse the commands of the high scribe. Mariska had been chosen by the pharaoh herself and her words carried the backing of a god.

Having a handful of towering stone warriors had made taking down an ancient remarkably easy, the Goldens’ natural toughness coming with exceptional strength. That hadn’t stopped the ancient from picking up one of them in its teeth and tossing them across the clearing. The Golden was fine, save for a few chips in their torso, but they had found the whole thing embarrassing. It was nothing a quick patch job wouldn’t fix, though filling the marks with cement would leave scars. It would prove a constant reminder that biologicals weren’t to be underestimated even if they were disgusting.

Mariska had found the story amusing as her warrior had recounted it to her and had resolved to mention it in her next report to her goddess. That a god needed a written report didn’t strike Mariska as odd, it was simply the way things were. Questioning Neferure was not her place, even if the object on her desk was of dubious use. Mariska put down her quill and picked up the small brass cylinder. When Mariska had sent the groblins request back home the pharaoh had found out and demanded that the request be completed overnight. It had to have taken a dozen runecrafters working in tandem to make it so quickly.
